Coastal salmon fishing updates show Westport is best for chinook followed by Neah Bay

Salmon fishing off the coast continues to be good at just about every port.

“At Neah Bay we saw a 0.68 fish per person average last week, and that is pretty good and just right behind Westport’s catch average (0.75 fish per rod),” said Wendy Beeghly, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist.

“Fishing at Westport was slow early last week, and then it was good over the weekend,” Beeghly said. “It stayed good (June 25, Monday) and I heard today (June 26, Tuesday) guys were getting the chinook limit rather quickly, but they’re stil not finding the coho.”

Beeghly says at La Push it was 0.36 chinook per rod so fishing was little bit slower there. A catch per rod average was unavailable from Ilwaco but reports indicate anglers were finding fair to good catches of chinook.

Westport is open Sundays to Thursdays for salmon until Sept. 30, and Ilwaco is open daily through Sept. 30. At Westport and Ilwaco anglers can now keep all chinook and hatchery-marked coho.

La Push and Neah Bay are open daily for hatchery-marked chinook fishing until June 30, and then open for all chinook and hatchery-marked coho daily from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Each port might close sooner if quotas are achieved.
