Columbia estuary sturgeon catch picks up

Here is the latest from the Columbia River estuary sturgeon fishery from state Fish and Wildlife:

Including fish released, charter boat anglers averaged a legal per every 4.7 rods while private boat anglers averaged one per every 4.0 rods.

If an angler caught a fish, there was a one in four chance it would be legal size.

Ilwaco-Fort Canby: 21 private boats with 61 anglers caught 14 sturgeon and released 26; 40 charter boats with 405 anglers caught 94 sturgeon and released 339.

Chinook: 42 private boats with 111 anglers caught 25 sturgeon and released 30

.

Last week anglers in the estuary made 4,100 trips and caught 1,100 sturgeon. The cumulative catch is 2,800 sturgeon or 67-percent of the guideline with two weeks to go.
