New fishing regulations implemented on Skagit River to reduce hooking summer chinook

There’s some bad things happening on the Skagit River with anglers taking advantage of the current game-fish rules, and specifically targeting chinook, which is leading toward increased mortality rates on these salmon listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act.

In order to put a halt to this problem, state Fish and Wildlife has implemented selective gear fishing rules with a maximum hook gap of 1/2 inch required.

The new ruling takes effect July 5 through Aug. 31 on the Skagit River from the mouth to the Highway 536 Bridge at Mt Vernon (Memorial Highway Bridge); July 16 to Aug. 31 from the Highway 536 Bridge to Gilligan Creek; July 5 to Sept. 15 on from Gilligan Creek to The Dalles Bridge at Concrete; July 5 to Sept. 15 from the Dalles Bridge at Concrete to the Highway 530 Bridge at Rockport; and July 16 to Sept. 15 from Highway 530 Bridge to Cascade River Road (Marblemount Bridge), July 16 to Sept 15.
