Here is an update on the Lower Columbia River steelhead catch from Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist:
For the month of July we (WA only) sampled 3,006 steelhead kept/released. In July 2011, we sampled 2,942 (18.5-percent) of the total 15,897 fish kept/released and 2,893 (15.6-percent) of the estimated total 18,516 steelhead handled in August 2011. Using a 20-percent sample rate then 15,000 fish would have been handled in July 2012; 20,000 fish using a 15-percent sample rate.
The record for the month of July is 15,934 fish in 2009. The record for any single month is 18,516 steelhead handled in August 2011.
Stay tuned as preliminary and final catch estimates are underway and will be reported later this month when they become available.
