Ilwaco daily limit raised to two chinook beginning this Monday

Those planning on a salmon fishing trip to the southwestern coast off Ilwaco will be allowed to keep two chinook salmon daily beginning Monday, Aug. 27.

That means the entire coast is open for anglers to keep two chinook daily from Ilwaco to Neah Bay as part of their two-salmon daily limit.

All coastal ports (Ilwaco, Westport, La Push and Neah Bay) are open daily. Wild coho must be released and only those with a missing adipose fin may be kept as part of their daily catch limit.

The salmon fishery off Ilwaco started off in late June with a one chinook daily limit in order to make sure the season lasts up until it closes on Sept. 30.

“We started the season with a conservative catch limit for chinook in the southern ports,” Pat Pattillo, the assistant to the director of state Fish and Wildlife said in a news release. “But enough of the chinook catch guideline remains to allow anglers two chinook per day off Ilwaco without much risk of exceeding the guideline.”

Through Aug. 19, Ilwaco anglers caught 55 percent (6,153 chinook) of the 11,100 chinook quota. Only 24 percent (8,240 hatchery coho) of the 34,860 quota has been caught.

Westport, La Push and Neah Bay are open until Sept. 23.
