It was a record setting day on Saturday for the Edmonds Coho Derby hosted by the PSA Sno-King Chapter.

While the winning fish wasn’t a whopper and caught by Bryan Thompson weighed 11 pounds, it was definitely a day of quantity as a new record 599 coho were weighed-in (400 was the previous highest catch) for 975 anglers.

Thompson took home $5,000 for his winning coho.

“The fishing is just amazing, and I can’t imagine a derby or fishing being any better than this,” said Tony Floor, director of fishing affairs for the Northwest Marine Trade Association and the Northwest Salmon Derby Series.

Other top finishers were: 2, Nick Uhrict, 10 pounds-15.84 ounces, $2,000; 3, Cyndee Devore, 10-12.16, $1,000; 4, Richard Welch, 10-12.00; 5, Angela Small, 10-11.84; 6, Walt Wojcik, 10-10.00; 7, Sean Shea, 10-9.44; 8, Cheri Morgan, 10-8.48; 9, Charles Malmgrem, 10-7.20; 10, David Broom, 10-5.92.

36 of the coho weighed in were 3 pounds; 162 fish were 4 pounds; 143 fish were 5 pounds; 101 fish were 6 pounds; 78 fish were 7 pounds; 45 were 8 pounds; 16 fish were 9 pounds; and 13 fish were 10 pounds.

The derby catch lured 803 anglers who caught 284 coho last year, and doubled the catch of 145 in 2010.
