Fun six week-plus Westport Boat Basin Salmon Derby begins Saturday

There’s a wonderful salmon fishery that happens each fall at Westport without anglers ever needing to leave the dock of the marina.

The Westport/Grayland Chamber of Commerce invites folks to partake in the Westport Boat Basin Salmon Derby which begins this Saturday, Sept. 15 through Oct. 31 where anglers fish the inner-marina piers target returning net-pen produced hatchery fish.

No derby ticket purchase is required, and prizes range from salt water taffy, to meals at local restaurants, to overnight lodging.

Since the 1970’s Westport’s Ocasta High School has worked with state Fish and Wildlife to raise up to 200,000 fingerling salmon in pens at the marina as an oceanography project, and release them when they reach growth goal. When they mature they return in search of spawning grounds and can be caught right off the dock during derby days.

The boat basin is of the most easily accessible spots to catch a salmon right off the dock. The salmon circle the marina and can be seen and caught from just about any dock.

Also the “derby within the derby” is Oct. 6-7, and is a special Weekend Family Derby where teams of two or more family members can register for fun prizes, and also qualify for the regular derby.

A special prize will be awarded to each team consisting of three generations or more, as well as sharing the experience and creating new family traditions.

For information visit the Westport-Grayland Chamber of Commerce website.
