Outdoor writer Dave Graybill hits the Oregon Coast for salmon

Here is the latest fishing report from Dave Graybill, longtime Eastern Washington outdoor radio host and angler:

In my previous report I mentioned that I would be traveling from Fish Camp in the Columbia River Gorge to the Oregon coast to do some salmon fishing. This was the second year I have done so in September, and works out to be a very good time to fishing out of Nehalem.

Richard Robinson is my host, and he grew up in this area and even was a guide there for many years. I was joined by Kevin Winters of Leavenworth and Mike Kitner of Wenatchee. I was on board for two days, and we boated five kings each of these days, weighing up to 30 pounds.

We even squeezed a little time to do some crabbing and I was able to bring home some nice fillets of fresh salmon in addition to some fresh crab.

We fish in “The Jaws”, where the river meets the Pacific, and it can get very interesting as the rollers and breakers create some rough water at the entrance. I battled one fish for one hour and eight minutes, because it kept pulling into this perilous water and we had to retreat back inside to calmer water.

I finally landed the fish, which was under 30 pounds, but really used the heavy currents to its advantage.
