Anglers doing the jig for squid along Puget Sound waterfront piers

Squid jigging has gotten off to a fast and furious start with some anglers getting easy limits of the slimy decapods.

“It really has been nice start, and so far it looks like it’ll be a pretty darn good season,” said Jerry Beppu, owner of Linc’s Tackle Shop in Seattle. “Let’s just hope it keeps on going through the winter.”

Beppu says anglers were catching them off the A Dock in Shilshole Bay where lights shine down at the edge of the wooden pier, but beware that the gates close daily at 10 p.m.

Other good reports have come from Pier 86 off Elliott Way on the Seattle waterfront near the grain terminal, Edmonds Pier and at the Seacrest Boathouse Pier in West Seattle. The Seattle Aquarium Pier is another hot spot, but make sure to bring a powerful lantern to shine on the water below.

The best time to fish for squid is at night during a flood tide. Daily limit is five quarts or 10 pounds.
