Coastal razor clam digs were very productive this past weekend

The second series of fall coastal razor clam digs opened this past weekend with excellent digging on all beaches.

“Digging was really good everywhere, and it was limits (first 15-clams dug daily per person) for everyone we saw,” said Dan Ayres, the head state Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish manager. “I was at Twins Harbors (on Sunday night) and at Mocrocks on Saturday, and there was so many happy clams diggers and not very big crowds.”

Over the weekend state Fish and Wildlife checked 7,800 diggers, and saw just shy of limits with 14.9 clams per person.

“Digging on Saturday was tougher because it was really wet,” Ayres said. “Clam sizes are similar to the first dig, and lot on size depends on the beaches you’re at. Mocrocks has some bigger clams mixed in with some small clams.”

Twin Harbors will be open Tuesday, Oct. 30, and low tide is minus-0.4 feet at 7:46 p.m. Digging is allowed after noon (12 p.m.) each day.

Other tentative dates once tests for marine toxins are approved are:
