The popular Resurrection Winter Blackmouth Derby is Dec. 7-8 at the Port of Friday Harbor Marina on San Juan Island.
The derby is hosted by the Fidalgo-San Juan Islands Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers and the final event in the Northwest Salmon Derby Series.
Cost is $400 with a limit of four anglers per boat and a limit of 100 teams.
First place prize is $10,000, and second wins $2,500. There is also a $1,000 prize for total team weight, and a free 2013 entry for the winner of the Mystery Fish prize.
“The winter season in the San Juans is a selective fishery (and) we want to raise the awareness of the benefits of selective fishing, while promoting good sportsmanship and resource stewardship” Andy Holman, derby organizer said in a news release.
All net proceeds from the derby which is staffed by club and community volunteers will go directly towards salmon enhancement projects.
Last year’s proceeds of nearly $7,000 were donated to the Glenwood Springs Salmon Hatchery in Eastsound on Orcas Island.
