Blue Creek area on Cowlitz opens sooner than expected to fishing

The Blue Creek area of the Cowlitz River is opening earlier than expected for hatchery cutthroat trout and steelhead.

The hatchery has reached their spawning escapement goal so the remaining fish are available for anglers to catch.

Anglers will be able to fish Nov. 14 through Jan. 31 from mouth upstream to posted sign just above rearing pond outlet.

Daily limit is five trout with a minimum size of 12 inches, and no more than two fish over 20 inches may be kept. Release wild cutthroat and wild steelhead. Release all salmon. Night fishing closure and anti-snagging rule is in effect.

Access to Blue Creek is by foot either from the mouth or from the trail at the trout hatchery boat ramp parking lot.

Anglers over age 15 must have a Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement, and a valid fishing license.
