Recreational shellfish harvesting adjusted on two local beaches in 2013

There are shellfish regulation changes coming up for two beaches in the Puget Sound region.

The clam and oyster season has been delayed at Oyster Reserves of North Bay in Case Inlet near the town of Victor, which will open April 1 through Sept. 15.

In the past it had been open year-round, but an increase of effort this past season has lead to an overharvest of shellfish.

The clam season has also been shortened at Belfair State Park in Hood Canal, and will now be open April 1-30 only.

Clam harvest last season had increased and lead to a reduced season this coming year.

State Fish and Wildlife will conduct a clam survey on the newly health-certified portion of this beach in March and the season could be extended depending on the outcome of the survey.

The oyster season at Belfair State Park is still open year-round, including the newly health-certified area.
