Low steelhead catch reported for December in Hanford Reach area of Columbia River

Here is the latest steelhead catches for the Hanford Reach area of the Columbia River by Paul Hoffarth, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist in Pasco:

An estimated 103 steelhead were caught and 72 steelhead were harvested in December. This was one of the lowest catch/harvests reported in recent years.

In December of 2011 there was a total catch of 200 with 107 kept; in December of 2010 there was 157 with 149; and in December of 2009 there was 306 with 209.

State Fish and Wildlife staff interviewed 131 anglers in December with a 28-percent of the effort. Anglers averaged 17 hours per fish caught.

For the fishery that started Oct. 1, 714 steelhead have been caught with 356 fish harvested.

The highest catches occurred in October when 338 steelhead were caught with 120 kept for 5,086 angler hours followed by a November figure of 273 steelhead with 164 kept for 4,094 angler hours.
