Razor clam diggers beat out Tuesday night storm, and find very good success

Many razor clam diggers avoided heading to the coast for this week’s opener on Tuesday night, but those who did found very good digging at Twin Harbors.

“The bulk of the stormy weather really didn’t hit the beaches until late overnight and while it was windy the surf didn’t whip up until after the early evening low tide change,” said Dan Ayres, the head state Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish manager.

“An estimated 280 diggers at Twin Harbors actually did well, and averaged 13 clams per person (the first 15 clams dug is a daily limit),” Ayres said.

Ayres says the wind was expected to calm down by Wednesday night with a surf forecast of 12 feet, and then is expected to drop down to six feet by Friday. That means those who can bear likely freezing temperatures will likely find some decent coastal razor clam digging heading into the weekend.

Digging is open Thursday, Jan. 10 at Twin Harbors, Long Beach and Copalis; Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12 at Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Copalis and Mocrocks; and Sunday and Monday, Jan. 13-14 at Twin Harbors. Digging is allowed after noon each day.

Low tides: Jan. 10, minus-1.3 feet at 5:27 p.m.; Jan. 11, -1.6 at 6:14 p.m.; Jan. 12, -1.5 at 6:58 p.m.; Jan. 13, -1.2 at 7:41 p.m.; and Jan. 14, -0.6 at 8:22 p.m.

Other tentative dates are: Feb. 7 and Feb. 11-12 at Twin Harbors; Jan. 26 and Feb. 8-9 at Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Copalis and Mocrocks; and Jan. 25, Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and Feb. 23-24 at Long Beach and Twin Harbors.
