State Fish and Wildlife Southwest Washington fishing reports

Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River – 6 bank anglers released 2 steelhead and 1 cutthroat.

Last week Tacoma Power recovered 23 winter-run steelhead, eight coho adults and two jacks during five days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator. During the past week Tacoma Power employees released three coho adults, one jack and one winter-run steelhead into Lake Scanewa above Cowlitz Falls Dam at the Day Use Site.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 6,580 cubic feet per second on Monday, February 11. Water visibility is nine feet.

Washougal River – 37 boat anglers kept 2 hatchery steelhead and released 2 hatchery and 5 wild steelhead. 51 bank anglers released 1 hatchery and 4 wild steelhead. No fish were kept.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam – Quite a few anglers prospecting for spring chinook including 16 boats and nearly 100 bank anglers counted during last Saturday’s (Feb. 9) effort flight count.

Bonneville Pool – No salmonid effort was observed.

The Dalles Pool – The dozen anglers sampled had no catch.

John Day Pool – Boat anglers are catching some steelhead. Fishing is slow from the bank.

Sturgeon

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam – Effort was generally light during last Saturday’s effort flight count with less than 3 dozen boats and a dozen bank anglers tallied. Limited sampling show no catch.

Bonneville Pool – Including fish released, boat anglers averaged a legal per every 3.8 rods. Bank anglers were also catching some legals.

Through Feb. 4, an estimated 216 (19.6%) of the 1,100 annual guideline had been taken. Catch-and-release only until the possible summer season.

The Dalles Dam – Boat anglers are catching some legals. Slow for legal size fish from the bank. An estimated 9 (3%) of the 300 fish guideline had been caught through January.

John Day Pool – Boat anglers are catching some legals. Slow from the bank. Through January, an estimated 35 (7%) of the 500 fish guideline had been taken.

Walleye and Bass

Bonneville Pool – Little to no effort for either specie.

The Dalles and John Day pools – Boat anglers are catching some walleye. No effort observed for bass.

Trout

Battle Ground Lake and Klineline Pond – Planted with 3,000 and 1,500 rainbows, respectively, averaging 2/3 pound each Feb. 4. No report on angling success.
