Two beaches near Port Townsend will open April 1 for clam and oyster gathering
State Fish and Wildlife announced the sport clam and oyster seasons will open early at Oak Bay and South Indian Island County parks in Jefferson County near Port Townsend.
Oak Bay County Park will be open April 1 through July 31, and South Indian Island County Park will be open April 1 through June 15.
According to a state Fish and Wildlife news release both these adjacent beaches opened in May last year. Surveys indicate that the clam population at Oak Bay has increased in part to enhancement by state Fish and Wildlife allowing for a longer season.
Effort at South Indian Island increased significantly last season requiring a shorter upcoming season. The earlier opening date for both beaches minimizes the chance that Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) closures will impact harvest opportunity. The oyster seasons on these beaches coincide with the clam seasons.
