Latest state Fish and Wildlife Lower Columbia River spring chinook catch figures

Last week on the Lower Columbia, anglers made 9,912 trips and caught 487 adult Chinook (360 kept and 127 released). Upriver spring Chinook have comprised about 75% of the retained catch during March. The cumulative catch is 784 adult Chinook kept and 243 adults released.

Last week’s catch rates were likely affected by a large abundance of smelt, many of which are nearing the end of their life cycle and at least some of which have made it as far upstream as the Sandy River.  Dead and dying smelt were easily visible in most areas of the Columbia, both near the shoreline and on the surface of the river.  Large numbers of California sea lions were also observed moving upstream last week, including many small individual animals.

From Feb. 1-March 24, 2013 an estimated 30,900 angler trips have produced 784 adult Chinook kept (216 lower river and 568 upper river based on Visual Stock Identification) and 243 released.  The 2013 pre-season expectations for the entire season were 6,100 adult Chinook kept (all stocks) from 63,500 angler trips.

Below are the effort and catch by river section and a guide to the various river sections.
