Black Lake Derby opening day fishing reveals many happy kids and good catches

The City of Ilwaco hosted the Black Lake Fishing Derby on opening day last Saturday, April 27, and 321 trout were weighed-in.

State Fish and Wildlife did a survey and saw 45 anglers with 146 for a 3.2 trout per rod average. The largest fish was 4 pounds, and vegetation control improved fishing conditions from shore.

The biggest fish caught in the 11-14 age division was Ryan Scales, age 12 with a 17 ¼ inch, 2 pound, 6 ounce trout; second place went to Conner Pond, age 11 with a 16 ½ inch, 1 pound,  10 ounce trout; and third went to Alex Kaino, age 12 with a 15 inch, 1 pound, 3 ounce trout.

In the 7-10 age division, Jacob Rogers, age 7 caught a 19 inch trout that weighed a whopping 4 pounds; second was Milly Gustafson, age 7 with an 18 ½ inch, 2 pound, 14 ounce trout; and third was Jayden Edgell, age 7, 16 ¾ inch, 2 pound, 3 ounce trout.

In the zero to six age division first place went to Elsa Linquist, age 2, with an 18 inch trout that weighed 3 pounds, 9 ounces; second was Ruary Schimelpfenig, age 3 with a 17 ½ inch, 3 pound, 3 ounce trout; and third was Hudson Greenfield, age 5 with a 15 ¼ inch, 1 pound,11 ounce trout.

In the aggregate division first was Jacob Rogers with 6 pounds, 13 ounces; second place was Shaylee Suomela, age 3, with 5 pounds, 10 ounces; and third was Hudson Greenfield with 5 pounds, 5 ounces.
