New fly-fishing only water opens soon in Chelan County

An area in Chelan County once closed to public access will soon be open for fly-fishing catch-and-release only opportunities.

The Upper Wheeler Reservoir, located about 11 miles southwest of Wenatchee, will be open for fly-fishing from May 18 through Sept. 14 for trout and all other game fish.

The reservoir is owned and operated by the Wenatchee Heights Reclamation District (WHRD).

In a news release, state Fish and Wildlife has made arrangements with WHRD and the Wenatchee Valley Fly Fishers (WVFF) to grant public access to recreational anglers under fly only regulations.

As part of that agreement it will include fish stocking and a land-use agreement by state Fish and Wildlife, and site maintenance by the WVFF.

This is the first fly-only area in Chelan County, and will be added to the current 15 other statewide fly only waters.

The area will be managed under statewide general rules for size and bag limits. The use of motors is prohibited.
