Rally to keep the Samish Hatchery from closing is Thursday in Burlington

The Samish Hatchery is on the closure cutting blocks once again, and there will be a rally titled:  “Save Samish Hatchery Day” 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6 at Pamona Grange Park (across from Samish Hatchery) on 5625 Old Highway 99 North Road in Burlington.

The hatchery is part of budget reductions proposed by the state Senate, and may be headed to the final debate in Olympia. The budget is looking for $24.6-million in cuts by state Fish and Wildlife.

Supporters will urge legislators to take the hatchery closure off the table during the special session that ends June 11.

This isn’t the first time the century-old Samish Hatchery has been included in closure proposals.

According to a news release sent out on behalf of the coalition by the Washington Federation of State Employees/AFSCME – a 40,000-state employee union that represents thousands of natural resource workers, including fish hatchery specialists in two statewide locals – the closure will also cut more than $1.4-million in annual economic value to the community including tourism, recreation-based businesses and family fun.

If closed it would eliminate more than 4.5-million fall chinook production in the Nooksack/Samish region that provide tribal, commercial and sport fishing opportunities in Puget Sound.
