Rough water and slow action greets Westport salmon anglers Saturday, but action improved by Sunday

The opening day of the ocean hatchery-marked Chinook salmon fishing season at Westport and Ilwaco started off Saturday, June 8 with the bar at the entrance to Grays Harbor being closed for all boats 30 –feet and under.

“The water was rough, and people did get out both charters and private boats, but they had to wait after the maximum ebb,” said Wendy Beeghly, a state Fish and Wildlife coastal salmon biologist. “So Saturday was not a very good day of fishing at Westport, and folks didn’t do well and we didn’t see very many fish at all.”

The good news is that by Sunday, June 9 the bar settled down, the ocean wasn’t as rough and anglers started to find fish.

“They did considerably well on Sunday,” Beeghly said. “In fact, they found a little patch of fish by going north of the harbor off the beach and did better overall.

Beeghly says the fisheries sampler at Ilwaco saw some fish but not a whole lot of angling effort.
