Summer king fishing picks up in San Juan Islands, and Bellingham Derby begins Friday
The San Juan Islands finally came to life for salmon this past week.
“Chinook fishing in the San Juans picked up some last week,” said Kevin Klein, a member of the Friday Harbor Puget Sound Anglers. “Around the 4th, reports came in of some very nice fish from 22-32 pounds.”
Klein says trolling Silver Horde spoons behind Q-Cove Flashers has paid off for him.
“These kings are spread out,” Klein said. “You have to put in your time and look for them.”
The Puget Sound Anglers Bellingham Salmon Derby is this weekend July 12-14. Largest fish is worth $5,000; second is $2,500; and third is $1,000.
The derby is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, which hosts 15 derbies throughout the season, and every contestant gets a ticket to the boat raffle to be announced at the Everett Coho Derby is September.
