Northern Puget Sound to close for hatchery kings starting this Monday

State fisheries managers expect the northern Puget Sound (Marine Catch Area 9) hatchery chinook guideline will be achieved soon, and will close to retention of chinook beginning Monday, Aug. 5.

Northern Puget Sound will remain open for coho and pinks, and the daily limiy will be two coho, plus two pinks. Chinook fishing off the Edmonds Pier will remain open.

King catches have also started to ramp up in central Puget Sound (Area 10) where the hatchery chinook daily catch limit will be reduced from two to one starting Monday, Aug. 5. The daily limit in central Sound is two salmon, plus two pinks.

In fact, many on the state sport fishing advisory board are concerned that since the catches have improved in many areas of central Sound that a big shift will occur once Area 9 closes and will also lead to a premature chinook closure before the scheduled Aug. 31 closing date.

Originally Area 9 was also supposed to remain open through Aug. 31, but just like last year it will now close sooner than expected.

Salmon regulations differ in some sub-marine areas of central and northern Puget Sound so anglers should check before heading out the door.
