Strait of Juan de Fuca just fair at best for pinks and hatchery coho

The Strait of Juan de Fuca is just fair at best for a mix of hatchery coho and pinks.

“It is mostly pinks at Sekiu along with a few coho, and not any big pinks numbers like what we saw a couple years ago when we had a lot of pinks,” said Larry Bennett, the state Fish and Wildlife head sampler in the Strait.

“Boats at Sekiu were averaging about three to four pinks,” Bennett said. “At Port Angeles it is kind of the same thing with not much in the way of coho, and some pinks with a two to three per boat average.”

Bennett says boats at Port Townsend got into a good number of pinks along the west side of Whidbey Island.

The Sekiu area in the western Strait (Marine Catch Area 5) is open for pinks and hatchery coho through Sept. 14. Daily limit is two fish plus two additional pinks. From Sept. 15-30, anglers will be allowed to catch all coho or pinks. Daily limit is two fish, and anglers must release chinook and chum. From Oct. 1-31, the daily limit goes to two salmon, and one may be a chinook. Chinook minimum size limit is 22 inches.

The Port Angeles area in the eastern Strait (Marine Catch Area 6) is open for pinks and hatchery coho through Sept. 30. Daily limit is two fish plus two additional pinks. From Oct. 1-31, the daily limit goes to two salmon, and one may be a chinook. Chinook minimum size limit is 22 inches.
