CCA Tri-Cities Chapter to host a Live Salmon Capture Derby

The Coastal Conservation Association Tri-Cities Chapter is hosting a Live Salmon Capture Derby this Friday through Sunday (Oct. 25-27).

The objective is to improve the genetic fitness of salmon at the Priest Rapids Hatchery by introducing more wild fish into the hatchery spawning process.  This will help ensure the continued health of the Hanford Reach salmon, which were part of a record-setting return of upriver bright chinook salmon this year.

The program is a special cooperative project being coordinated by the local Hanford Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, state Fish and Wildlife and the Grant County PUD.  Anglers are asked to register each morning and keep all salmon alive and return caught salmon to biologists at the three fish drop locations each day.

Daily and cumulative prizes will be awarded for anglers bringing in the most live salmon to the collection stations at Vernita Bridge, White Bluffs, and Coyote Rapids. Anglers are reminded that fishing in these areas is closed unless participating in the live brood stock project, so this is a chance to help the resource while fishing in uncrowded conditions from the Hanford Wooden Powerlines to Priest Rapids Dam.

For entry information and rules, visit http://www.ccawashington.org/kingofthereach or contact the Derby Chair, Don McBride at don.mcbride@live.com or call 800-457-8746.
