Winter boating safety courses happening in February

Boaters and anglers are required in Washington to possess a valid State Boaters Card while on the waters across the state, and the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 12 in Edmonds is offering some classes in January and February.

The Boating Skills and Seamanship is a 12-week course that meets 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday beginning Feb. 13. The class covers all aspects of boating, and is good for both novice and experienced boaters. In addition, it meets the educational requirements for the Washington State Boaters Card. Class fee is $55 or $75 for two sharing book.

The Weekend Navigator Class is a 10-week course that meets 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday beginning Feb. 25.

Learn how to navigate your boat safely, practice reading charts – electronic and paper, learn to use electronic navigation tools – chart plotter’s and PC’s, explore using tablets and smart phones as back-up tools, practice plotting routes and DR – electronic and on paper, understand how to use your radar, learn how your AIS and autopilot can enhance your navigation, practice using tides and currents info – specific to the West Coast. Class fee is $95 per person or $145 for two sharing book & chart.

The classes will be held at the Chuck Olson Chevrolet Auxiliary classroom. For details, email boatclasses@hotmail.com or contact Korky Heryla at 425-483-9684.
