State Fish and Wildlife northern Olympic coast steelhead checks

WinterfishHere are the latest state Fish and Wildlife sport fishing winter steelhead checks from the northern Olympic coastal rivers:

Bogachiel/Quillayute River

Dec. 1-5: 11 bank anglers and seven boat anglers caught two steelhead for total of 70.0 hours fished. Dec. 6-8: 12 bank anglers and 51 boat anglers caught 17 steelhead for total of 305.5 hours fished. Dec. 9-12: Seven bank anglers and 24 boat anglers caught 21 steelhead for a total of 187.0 hours fished. Dec. 13-15: 92 bank anglers and 41 boat anglers caught 22 steelhead, and released six steelhead, seven cutthroat trout and one coho for a total of 581.0 hours fished. Dec. 16-19: 22 bank anglers and 27 boat anglers caught 17 steelhead, and released one steelhead and one cutthroat trout for a total of 285.5 hours fished.

Dec. 23-26: 11 bank anglers and three boat anglers caught no fish for a total of 55.5 hours fished (data was collected on Monday, Dec. 23 only). Dec. 27-29: 84 bank anglers and 107 boat anglers caught 50 steelhead, and released eight steelhead and three cutthroat trout for a total of 1,102.5 hours fished. Dec. 30-31 and Jan. 2: 17 bank anglers and seven boat anglers caught three steelhead, and released four steelhead, one coho and four cutthroat trout for a total of 116.0 hours fished.

Jan. 3-5: 48 bank anglers and 45 boat anglers caught six steelhead, and released five steelhead for a total of 583.5 hours fished. Jan. 6-9: 10 bank anglers and 12 boat anglers caught 11 steelhead for a total of 116.0 hours fished. Jan.10-12: Three bank anglers caught no fish for a total of 14.5 hours fished. High river flows late Friday through Sunday.

Jan. 13-16: 33 bank anglers and 63 boat anglers caught 10 steelhead (one wild steelhead kept was illegal), and released three steelhead for a total of 481.5 hours fished. Jan. 17-19: 74 bank anglers and 83 boat anglers caught 16 steelhead (two wild steelhead kept were illegal), and released 19 steelhead for a total of 751.0 hours fished.

Totals: 997 anglers caught 206 steelhead and released 38 for 5,143.5 hours fished.

Calawah River

Dec. 1-5: Three bank anglers caught no fish for total of 13.5 hours fished. Dec. 6-8: Four bank anglers caught one steelhead for total of 14.0 hours fished. Dec. 9-12: Five bank anglers caught no fish for a total of 5.0 hours fished. Dec. 13-15: 11 bank anglers caught seven steelhead, and released two steelhead, one coho and six whitefish for a total of 36.5 hours fished. Dec. 16-19: Five bank anglers released one steelhead for a total of 24.0 hours fished.

Dec. 20-22: 27 bank anglers caught two steelhead for a total of 83.0 hours fished. Dec. 23-26: Eight bank anglers released one jack steelhead for a total of 21.5 hours fished (data was collected on Monday, Dec. 23 only). Dec. 27-29: 20 bank anglers caught 13 steelhead, and released five steelhead for a total of 78.5 hours fished. Dec. 30-31: No fishing effort.

Jan. 3-5: 17 bank anglers and three boat anglers caught five steelhead, and released four steelhead and one coho for a total of 69.5 hours fished. Jan. 6-9: 10 bank anglers caught six steelhead for a total of 30.0 hours fished. Jan. 10-12: No angling effort. High flows late Friday through Sunday.

Jan. 13-16: 14 bank anglers and 14 boat anglers caught eight steelhead, and released eight steelhead and three cutthroat trout for a total of 154.5 hours fished. Jan. 17-19: 16 bank anglers and eight boat anglers caught three steelhead, and released five steelhead for a total of 102.0 hours fished.

Totals: 164 anglers caught 45 steelhead and released 25 for 632.0 hours fished.

Sol Duc River

Dec. 1-5: One bank angler caught no fish for total of 0.5 hours fished. Dec. 6-8: Two boat anglers caught one steelhead for total of 6.0 hours fished. Dec. 9-12: No fishing effort. Dec. 13-15: 10 bank anglers and four boat anglers released four steelhead and 12 coho for a total of 57.0 hours fished. Dec. 16-19: No fishing effort.

Dec. 20-22: 13 bank anglers and seven boat anglers released two steelhead for a total of 70.0 hours fished. Dec. 23-26: Four bank anglers and five boat anglers caught no fish for a total of 36.0 hours fished (data was collected on Monday, Dec. 23 only). Dec. 27-29: 12 bank anglers and 19 boat anglers released one steelhead, six coho, one chinook and one cutthroat trout for a total of 189.5 hours fished. Dec. 30-31 and Jan. 2: Four boat anglers caught one steelhead, and released two steelhead for a total of 36.0 hours fished.

Jan. 3-5: Four bank anglers and seven boat anglers released one steelhead and two coho for a total of 70.5 hours fished. Jan. 6-9: Four boat anglers released three steelhead, one coho, three cutthroat trout, one rainbow trout and one whitefish for a total of 28.0 hours fished. Jan. 10-12: Four bank anglers and nine boat anglers and released nine steelhead, one coho and one cutthroat trout for a total of 61.5 hours fished. High flows late Friday through Sunday.

Jan. 13-16: Three bank anglers and 36 boat anglers released 29 steelhead for a total of 298.5 hours fished. Jan. 17-19: 10 bank anglers and 86 boat anglers caught six steelhead, and released 75 steelhead for a total of 324.0 hours fished.

Totals: 244 anglers caught seven steelhead and released123 steelhead for 1,177.5 hours fished.

Lower Hoh River from Oxbow Campground to Barlow’s

Dec. 1-5: Three bank anglers caught one steelhead and released one steelhead for total of 5.0 hours fished. Dec. 6-8: 45 bank anglers and 39 boat anglers caught 32 steelhead, and released three steelhead, 29 bull trout and two coho for total of 412.5 hours fished. Dec. 9-12: 16 bank anglers and 22 boat anglers caught 20 steelhead, and released one steelhead, 22 bull trout and two coho for a total of 175.5 hours fished. Dec. 13-15: 88 bank anglers and 81 boat anglers caught 31 steelhead, and released three steelhead, 11 bull trout, three whitefish, three chinook, two cutthroat trout and one coho for a total of 613.5 hours fished. Dec. 16-19: 21 bank anglers and eight boat anglers caught 13 steelhead, and released five steelhead, two bull trout, one whitefish and one chinook for a total of 143.0 hours fished.

Dec. 20-22: 25 bank anglers and 16 boat anglers caught six steelhead and released three bull trout for a total of 157.5 hours fished Dec. 23-26: River was high and unfishable on Monday when data was collected. Dec. 27-29: 74 bank anglers and 52 boat anglers caught 26 steelhead, and released three steelhead, seven bull trout, three whitefish and five trout for a total of 550.0 hours fished. Dec. 30-31: 10 bank anglers caught one steelhead for a total of 29.5 hours fished.

Jan. 3-5: 40 bank anglers and 28 boat anglers caught 15 steelhead, and released five steelhead, four bull trout, seven whitefish, one trout and one cutthroat trout for a total of 341.5 hours fished. Jan. 6-9: 21 bank anglers and 10 boat anglers caught six steelhead, and released four steelhead, 10 bull trout, one cutthroat trout and one whitefish for a total of 111.0 hours fished. Jan. 10-12: Two bank anglers caught no fish for a total of 1.0 hours fished.

Jan. 13-16: Five bank anglers released one whitefish for a total of 9.5 hours fished. Jan. 17-19: 73 bank anglers and 15 boat anglers caught three steelhead, and released two steelhead, one cutthroat trout and two bull trout for a total of 283.5 hours fished.

Totals: 694 anglers caught 154 steelhead and released 30 steelhead for 2,833.0 hours fished.

Upper Hoh River from Oxbow Campground to Olympic National Park Boundary

Dec. 1-5: No anglers interviewed. Dec. 6-8: Three bank anglers and five boat anglers released one steelhead, one bull trout and one cutthroat trout for total of 23.0 hours fished. Dec. 9-12: One bank angler and two boat anglers released two steelhead, 12 whitefish and two cutthroat trout for a total of 19.0 hours fished. Dec. 13-15: 10 bank anglers and 12 boat anglers released two steelhead, 10  bull trout and 17 whitefish for a total of 95.5 hours fished. Dec. 16-19: Four bank anglers and two boat anglers caught no fish for a total of 23.5 hours fished.

Dec. 20-22: Two bank anglers and six boat anglers released two steelhead and three bull trout for a total of 35.5 hours fished. Dec. 23-26: River was high and unfishable on Monday when data was collected. Dec. 27-29: Nine bank anglers and 16 boat anglers caught four steelhead, and released three steelhead, 10 bull trout, 12 whitefish, two cutthroat trout and two coho for a total of 129.0 hours fished. Dec. 30-31: One bank angler caught no fish for a total of 1.0 hours fished.

Jan. 3-5: 11 bank anglers and 19 boat anglers caught two steelhead, and released one steelhead, on ebull trout and one coho for a total of 144.5 hours fished. Jan. 6-9: Three bank anglers and four boat anglers released four bull trout and two whitefish for a total of 37.0 hours fished. Jan. 10-12:No angling effort. High flows late Friday through Sunday.

Jan. 13-16: Three bank anglers and one boat angler released one whitefish for a total of 14.5 hours fished. Jan. 17-19: 24 bank anglers and 28 boat anglers caught two steelhead, and released 11 steelhead, three bull trout and five whitefish for a total of 267.5 hours fished.

Totals: 166 anglers caught eight steelhead and released 22 steelhead for 808.5 hours fished.
