Outdoor writer Dave Graybill finds trout fishing success at Rufus Woods

Here is the latest fishing report from Dave Graybill, longtime Eastern Washington outdoor radio host and angler:

There is very good news for winter anglers in Central Washington.

Fishing for triploid rainbow has taken a sharp turn for the better.  There are now very good numbers of large triploids being landed on the reservoir just above Chief Joseph Dam.  I had heard some good reports and then tried it myself last Thursday.

Jerry Gutzwiler joined me and when we reached the launch, Chuck Largent, of Wenatchee, was just coming off the water.

It took him just 20 minutes to get two very nice triploids, weighing 6 or 7 pounds.  We quickly put the boat in the water and headed out to join other boats fishing along the can line.

Most everyone had a fish or two when we got there, and we started getting fish right away.  Jerry’s first fish was at least 7 pounds.  We came home with three fish that were 23 to 25 inches and very heavy bodied and broad shouldered, as the triploids are.  We released a few, lost a couple and had several hits that just didn’t hook up.

Get yourself a purple Apex, troll it shallow and expect good action on Rufus Woods now.  Many of the fish being caught have tags from the Colville Tribe, with a number to call to report your catch.
