Bill Hayes Hot Plug’s Salmon Derby results

The Bill Hayes Hot Plug’s Salmon Derby that took place on Camano Island last Saturday had 84 anglers seeking out the winning fish throughout the marine waters on the eastern side of Whidbey Island.

“There were 84 entries in the derby and seven fish weighed in,” said Ed Keller, the derby spokesman. “The weather was cold but flatĀ as glass in the morning till late afternoon. Then a east wind picked up and made it a little choppy.”

First place went to Zac Mackey who caught a 12.11 pound hatchery chinook off Camano Head using sppon, and took home $2,100.

Second was Gary Brossard with an 11.09 pound hatchery chinook and earned $840. Third was Ron Lampers with a 10.11 pound hatchery chinook that was worth a prize of $630. Fourth place was Doug Schneider who caught a 10.01 pound hatchery chinook running a squid off Onamac Point that paid off $420.

The Stanwood Eagles are hosting a Blackmouth Derbyon April 12-13. Cost is $50. Details: 360-629-3224 or 425-308-9437.
