The Anacortes Salmon Derby is this weekend (March 29-30), and tickets are still available with action in the San Juan Islands being very good through midweek.
This derby is highly popular and typically sells out quickly, and is limited to 1,000 entries.
The derby offers $25,000 in purse money with lots of merchandise prizes. There are also special prize categories for women, youth, and active military.
Last year’s derby saw a record catch by 1,100 registered anglers who weighed in 256 fish.
Of those 188 fish were weighed-in on Saturday, and 68 were landed Sunday, which was the most fish caught in the derby’s history.
The overall winner was Scott Fowler of Burlington who caught a 21.52 pound fish on Saturday and took home $15,000. Coming in second place was Rich Olson of Everett who won $5,000 for his 19.42 pound fish, and barely beat Jay Murphy of Puyallup who caught a 19.1 pound fish and took home $2,500.
The cost of $60 per angler includes free launching at Cap Sante Marina; three night’s moorage; GAFFF (a free Friday night fishing film festival); Saturday night no-host social with snacks; and a Sunday BBQ lunch.
The derby is hosted by volunteer members of the Fidalgo-San Juan Islands Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers. Proceeds of the derby go to funding for scholarships that benefit students pursuing careers in fishery management and related science. Nearly $200,000 in scholarships and grants have been awarded.
