State Fish and Wildlife Columbia River regional fishing reports

Cowlitz River – 33 boat anglers kept 16 steelhead.  59 bank anglers kept 1 adult Chinook and 13 steelhead and released 2 steelhead.

Last week Tacoma Power recovered 587 winter-run steelhead, seven spring Chinook salmon and one cutthroat trout during five days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator. During the past week Tacoma Power employees released 35 steelhead and one cutthroat trout into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton and four steelhead and one spring Chinook adult into Lake Scanewa above Cowlitz Falls Dam.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 8,630 cubic feet per second on Monday, March 31. Water visibility is nine feet.

Lewis River – 5 bank anglers had no catch.  Remains closed for Chinook.

East Fork Lewis from mouth to top boat ramp at Lewisville Park and Washougal River from mouth to Mt. Norway Bridge – Open to fishing for hatchery steelhead Wednesday April 16. Through the first Friday in June, selective gear rules are in effect; no bait may be used.

Wind River and Drano Lake – At Drano, 8 boat anglers kept 2 spring Chinook.  No report from Wind.  2-3 boats daily at Wind and Drano over the past weekend.

Beginning this week, Drano Lake is closed to all fishing on Wednesdays through June. In addition, bank fishing only west of a line projected from the eastern most pillar of the Hwy. 14 Bridge to a posted marker on the north shore beginning April 16.

Lower Columbia below Bonneville Dam – From last Wednesday to yesterday we sampled 2,557 salmonid anglers (including 835 boats) with 316 adult and 2 jack spring Chinook and 9 steelhead.  266 (84%) of the adult Chinook were kept.  235 (88%) of the adult Chinook were sampled.  204 (87%) of the catch was upriver stock based on Visual Stock Identification.

Effort is increasing with over 1,300 boats and 1,146 bank anglers counted during yesterday’s (Sun. April 6) flight.

Due to the minimal number of upriver fish available to commercial fisheries (< 250) , no additional commercial fishing periods will be considered until a run size update is available in early/mid May.

Columbia River staff will distribute a “Winter/Spring update” tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday April 8) that will include both sport and commercial information.
