Those making travel plans to Wanapum State Park on the Columbia River should be aware that the park will be closed beginning Monday, April 28 until further notice.
The closure to the beach and water access site was necessary after a crack was found in Wanapum Dam.
State Parks is notifying people with reservations at Wanapum State Park through July 7 that their camping reservations have been cancelled and will process refunds. Customers with questions, can call 888-226-7688.
In early April, the crack in the dam forced the Grant County Public Utility District to lower the water level in the reservoir above the dam to relieve pressure. They also closed all beaches and access to the Columbia River above the dam to protect sensitive cultural resources and to help ensure public safety.
The Gingko Petrified Forest Interpretive Center, a nearby day-use facility in the Wanapum area, remains open.
Campers with reservations at Wanapum State Park for dates beyond July 7 may keep their reservations in place if they wish, in case the park reopens, or they may cancel at any time this summer for a full refund.
