Updated spot shrimp catch data, and Marine Area 8-1/8-2 reopens May 21

SpotShrimpRyan3Here are the updated 2014 Puget Sound Recreational Spot Shrimp Catch Estimates for May 3, May 7 and May 10 openers:

(Numbers are preliminary and could change with error checking, additional data, etc. Also there is some “rounding error” on the numbers provided. The “average” recreational boat fishes 3.5 pots (four is the maximum) and carries 3.3 fishermen on board.)

Note: State Fish and Wildlife has announced that Marine Areas 8-1 and 8-2 the east side of Whidbey Island, Everett/Saratoga Passage locations will reopen for one more day of spot shrimp fishing on Wednesday, May 21, after enough still remains in the sport catch quota.

Everett/Saratoga Pass, Marine Catch Area 8 (19,000 pounds is recreational quota in 2014, compared to 18,000 in 2013):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 524, May 3, 2014 (510, 2013 and 373, 2012); and 409, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 11.0, May 3, 2014 (18.6, 2013 and 18.6, 2012); and 15.3, May 7, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 11.6, May 3, 2014 (12.5, 2013 and 11.5, 2012); and 11.5, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 5,683, May 3, 2014 (9,457, 2013 and 6,933, 2012); and 6,257, May 7, 2014.

Northern Puget Sound, Marine Catch Area 9 (5,600 compared to 6,000):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 164, May 3, 2014 (283, 2013 and 202, 2012); and 177, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 17.3, May 3, 2014 (16.7, 2013 and 19.6, 2012); and 16.9, May 7, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 13.9, May 3, 2014 (14.6, 2013 and 13.3, 2012); and 13.9, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 2,827, May 3, 2014 (4,730, 2013 and 3,971, 2012); and 2,993, May 7, 2014.

Central Puget Sound, Marine Catch Area 10 (5,500 compared to 5,500):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 159, May 3, 2014 (119, 2013 and 91, 2012); and 149, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 17.7, May 3, 2014 (17.4, 2013 and 20.9, 2012); and 18.5, May 7, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 12.5, May 3, 2014 (12.3, 2013 and 12.4, 2012); and 12.4, May 7, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 2,815, May 3, 2014 (2,060, 2013 and 1,898, 2012); and 2,745, May 7, 2014.

Elliott Bay, Marine Catch Area 10 (3,800 compared to 4,500):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 160, May 3, 2014 (161, 2013 and 116, 2012); and 129, May 7, 2014.

Hood Canal, Marine Catch Area 12 (90,000 compared 95,000):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 1,552, May 3, 2014 (1,722, 2013 and 1,510, 2012); 1,129, May 7, 2014; and 1,370, May 10, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 17.6, May 3, 2014 (18.0, 2013 and 17.8, 2012); 16.2, May 7, 2014; and 17.1, May 10, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 13.9, May 3, 2014 (13.9, 2013 and 14.1, 2012); 14.6, May 7, 2014; and 14.7, May 10, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 27,321, May 3, 2014 (31,005, 2013 and 26,889, 2012); 18,306, May 7, 2014; and 23,424, May 10, 2014.

Discovery Bay Shrimp District (1,600 compared to 2,000):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 46, May 3, 2014 (79, 2013 and 50, 2012); 36, May 7, 2014; and 59, May 10, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 9.0, May 3, 2014 (12.5, 2013 and 10.2, 2012); 7.4, May 7, 2014; and 6.2, May 10, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 15.4, May 3, 2014 (16.6, 2013 and 17.4, 2012); 18.2, May 7, 2014; and 17.0, May 10, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 416, May 3, 2014 (987, 2013 and 505, 2012); 263, May 7, 2014; and 366, May 10, 2014.

San Juan Island East and West, Marine Catch Areas 7 (32,000 compared to 40,500):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 100, May 3, 2014 (183, 2013 and 107, 2012).

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 11.1, May 3, 2014 (10.4, 2013 and 4.4, 2012).

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 12.2, May 3, 2014 (11.6, 2013 and 11.7, 2012).

San Juan Island South, Marine Catch Areas 7 (13,000 compared to 13,000):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 67, May 3, 2014 (98, 2013 and 92, 2012).

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 17.1, May 3, 2014 (10.8, 2013 and 9.9, 2012).

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 12.1, May 3, 2014 (11.5, 2013 and 12.6, 2012).

Estimated catch in pounds: 1,149, May 3, 2014 (1,056, and 914, 2012).

Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, Marine Catch Area 6 (16,000):

Estimated number boats shrimp fishing: 25, May 3, 2014.

Estimated catch per boats in pounds: 9.1, May 3, 2014.

Estimated count of spot shrimp per pound: 12.3, May 3, 2014.

Estimated catch in pounds: 227, May 3, 2014.

Here is a breakdown of the sport spot shrimp fishing seasons:

Hood Canal Shrimp District (Marine Area 12): Open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 21.

Discovery Bay Shrimp District (Marine Area 6): Open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 21.

Neah Bay, eastern Strait of Juan De Fuca and southern Puget Sound (Marine Areas 4 east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line, 5, 6 and 13, excluding Discovery Bay Shrimp District): Open daily and will close when the quota is attained or Sept. 15, whichever comes first. The exception is Marine Area 13, which closes for spot shrimp May 31.

San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7 East, South and West): Open May 21-24 and May 28-31. In Marine Area 7 West only, the season will be open daily beginning June 1 until the quota is reached or Sept. 15, whichever comes first.

Eastside of Whidbey Island (Marine Areas 8-1, 8-2): Open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 21.

In areas 4, 5, 6, 7 (East, South and West) and 13, start times will be one hour before sunrise.
