Friends of Cedar River Watershed host Cast & Dig event on July 12

Cedar6

Friends of the Cedar River Watershed are hosting the free Cast & Dig, a Fly Fishing and Habitat Restoration event, at King County Park’s Cavanaugh Pond Natural Area east of Renton, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12.

Participants will remove invasive blackberry and weed suppression fabric followed by a free lunch, educational presentations, fly fishing lessons and other workshops. The event is open for all ages.

The site – once home to a gravel-mining site – is now a diverse area of habitats from riparian forest to wetlands that host many different fish and wildlife.

The area is also a place for spawning sockeye, and coastal cutthroat trout and winter steelhead. Fisheries biologist, Paul Conrecode will give a presentation on salmon and a state of the Cedar River. Workshops include a hands-on casting and fly-tying demonstrations for all skill levels, a macro-invertebrate identification lab and a native plant walk.
