A strong hatchery steelhead return to the Cowlitz River will allow for an increased daily catch limit on the lower river.
Beginning Friday (Aug. 22) through Oct. 31, anglers will be able to keep up to three hatchery-marked steelhead daily from the Highway 4 Bridge at Kelso up to Mayfield Dam. All wild steelhead must be released.
Catch averages at some times during the past two weeks have been close to a fish per rod.
Through the middle of this month, a total of nearly 7,000 hatchery summer-run steelhead have returned to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery. During five days alone last week, 1,284 steelhead were recovered at the fish separator.
This has also allowed the hatchery crews to re-release 200 steelhead downstream to the Interstate-5 boat launch.
