The Edmonds Coho Derby hosted by the Sno-King Puget Sound Anglers sold more than 950 tickets and had 331 coho weighed-in on Saturday under great weather.

“The winning fish came out of Area 9, and a bunch of the fish were caught out of the Shipwreck area,” said George Harris, president of the Northwest Marine Trade Association and the Northwest Salmon Derby Series.

The winning fish was caught by Daniel Lejnieks and weighed 11.50 pounds, and he earned $5,000. Second place went to Mike Bachtel with an 8.8 pound and worth $2,000, and third place was Kari Ross with an 8.72 pound coho that paid off $1,000.

The top 23 coho weighed 6 pounds or more, and the average so far has been in the 4 to 5 pound range.

The record catch for the derby occurred in 2013 when 975 anglers landed 599 coho.

The event is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, which hosts 15 derbies throughout the year. Drawing for a Grand Prize Derby Series fully-equipped 21-foot Riverhawk boat with Mercury motor will be presented to one lucky winner during the Everett Coho Derby Sept. 20-21.

There is also a new drawing for the kids division and the winner will get a 14-foot Riverhawk Pro V boat with Mercury motor. Anglers participating in derby events after Sept. 21 will be entered to win the 2015 Series grand prize. For details, go to http://www.northwestsalmonderbyseries.com/.
