Coho fishing action building in many Puget Sound region rivers

GraysHarbor10 Sept. 26-12The recent rainstorms have been a boon for river salmon anglers with good numbers of coho heading upstream.

“It is getting better all the time with good numbers of coho in the Skagit, and is getting more and more consistent all the time,” said Brett Barkdull, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist. “I heard they’re knocking them on the Cascade, and did very well the last time the flows came up from the rainstorms.”

Just like the marine areas most of the coho in local rivers were averaging 3 ½ to 5 pounds peppered with some larger ones up to 13 pounds.

“The coho are all up and down the Nooksack, and I was working the river on Monday and saw fish sitting at the Skookum Creek Fish Hatchery (on the Nooksack South Fork),” Barkdull said. “The lower river on the Stilly was also loaded with coho.”

Other good coho spots are the Skagit from Mount Vernon up to Burlington; Nooksack; Stillaguamish; Lower Duwamish; Snohomish; Skykomish; Snoqualmie; Puyallup; and Green.

Those looking for kings should also head down the south-cental coast where some nice fish showed up in the Humptulips. The best bite is happening on gobs of salmon eggs with some catching them on plugs.
