Grays Harbor flooded with big coho salmon

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAStart making plans in the near future to take a salmon fishing trip to Grays Harbor.

“I fished Grays Harbor on Sunday and Monday, and we hooked 26 gorgeous coho averaging 8 to 15 pounds during the afternoon high water,” said Tony Floor, the director of sport fishing affairs for the Northwest Marine Trade Association.

The main action is happening along the harbor’s south channel markers near Stearns Bluff, a landmark hillside east of the Johns River mouth.

“It’s been pretty good especially when the weather “no wind and rain” cooperates,” Floor said. “The forecast is good and the fishing will continue into early November.”

The Grays Harbor coho forecast is 174,150 (65,394 hatchery and 108,756 wild) compared to 281,985 in 2013, and while not as large this season’s return it should produce decent action.

“Grays Harbor and the its tributaries have a reputation for monster size coho, and this year is no exception,” Floor said.
