More steelhead opportunities in the Hanford Reach area of Columbia River

More fishing opportunities to catch and keep hatchery steelhead are now in effect on the Columbia River in the Hanford Reach area between the Highway 395 Bridge at Pasco and Priest Rapids Dam.

The more liberal fisheries were implemented because returning hatchery steelhead are above spawning escapement, and this will reduce their numbers while increasing the number of wild steelhead to spawn.

Anglers may keep hatchery steelhead from the Highway 395 Bridge upstream to old Hanford townsite wooden powerline towers (Area 1) through Oct. 31, and then reverts back to permanent rules that allows fishing Nov. 1-March 31; from the Old Hanford townsite wooden powerline towers to Vernita Bridge (Area 2) through Oct. 22; and from the Vernita Bridge to Priest Rapids Dam (Area 3) through Oct. 22 and Nov. 27 until further notice.

Special rules for Areas 2 and 3 are selective gear rules are in effect, except the use of bait is allowed.

Daily limit is two hatchery steelhead with a minimum size of 20 inches.

Unmarked steelhead must be immediately released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water prior to release.
