Here is a rundown by Doug Hanada, Tengu Club Derby president on the first day of the Tengu Blackmouth Derby held Sunday, Oct. 27.
A total of 26 members fished and caught two blackmouth in Elliott Bay. Largest fish was caught by Justin Wong of Seattle and weighed 13 pounds, 9 ounces; and the other was landed by his dad Benny Wong and weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces.
“Great weather for the opener of the 70th Tengu Derby on Sunday as 26 members weighed in two nice blackmouth,” Hanada said. “Both fish were caught from the same boat off the east waterway, mid-morning. The lucky anglers reported marking lots of bait as soon as they started fishing there.”
Hanada said other members ranged all over Elliott Bay finding some pockets of bait off Salty’s, Duwamish Head and Fourmile Rock, but only caught one wild blackmouth and small shakers.
The Tengu Blackmouth Salmon Fun Derby is held every Sunday through Dec. 28 from daybreak to 11 a.m. at the Seacrest Boathouse in West Seattle. Cost is $15 per person, and $5 for kids under age 12. Details: 206-324-7600.
