Top two chinook in two-day Resurrection Derby weighed more than 18 pounds

The Resurrection Salmon Derby was held Friday and Saturday, and the $10,000 first place prize went to Steve Martin who caught an 18.89 pound hatchery chinook at Point Thompson off the north side of Orcas Island.

Pete Nelsen a familiar face around the San Juan Island fishing scene took second place with a hatchery chinook he caught on Friday in Cowlitz Bay that weighed 18.22 pounds and took home $2,500.

Third place went to Bill Havland with a 17.27; fourth was Dave Reese with a 17.09; and fifth was Rich Jackson and 17.03 fish.

The closest to the secret weight fish of 12.7 pounds was caught by Joel Skerlong and weighed 12.81.

The derby was part of the Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Northwest Salmon Derby Series. Next up in the derby series is the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic on Feb. 5-7. For details, go to http://www.northwestsalmonderbyseries.com/.
