State Fish and Wildlife Columbia River regional fishing reports

Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River – From I-5 Bridge upstream has been the best with anglers primarily catching coho at the between the hatcheries and steelhead at the trout hatchery.

During six days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator, last week Tacoma Power recovered:

  • 3,204 coho adults and 49 jacks
  • two fall Chinook adults
  • 14 summer-run steelhead
  • 71 winter-run steelhead
  • 37 cutthroat trout
  • 1 chum salmon

During the past week Tacoma Power employees released:

  • 878 coho adults, 19 jacks, eleven cutthroat trout into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton
  • 128 coho adults and three jacks at Franklin Bridge in Packwood
  • two cutthroat trout into Lake Scanewa above Cowlitz Falls Dam
  • 631 coho adults and four jacks into the Cispus River above the mouth of Yellow Jacket Creek

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 14,200 cubic feet per second on Monday, December 8. River visibility is six feet.

Kalama River – Little to no effort on the lower river.

Lewis River – On the North Fork, bank anglers are catching a few coho and steelhead while boat anglers are still catching fall Chinook.  The mainstem Lewis is slow.

Flows below Merwin Dam are currently 11,400 cfs, over 1.5 times higher than the long term mean of 7,110 cfs for this date.

Under permanent rules, the North Fork Lewis from Colvin Creek upstream to the overhead powerlines below Merwin Dam opens to fishing for Chinook, hatchery coho, and hatchery steelhead Tuesday Dec. 16.

Klickitat River – Bank anglers on the lower river are still averaging over 1.5 coho per rod when including fish released.

Flows at Pitt are currently 1,180 cfs, slightly higher than the long term mean of 958 cfs for this date.

Under permanent rules, the Klickitat River from #5 fishway upstream is closed to all fishing except whitefish.  Whitefish gear rules are in effect.  The whitefish only season runs through March.

Bonneville Pool – Boat anglers at the mouth of the Klickitat averaged about ½ fish per rod.

Recent plants of trout in SW WA lakes.  No report on angling success.
