Coastal razor clam season going strong with plenty more digs on the horizon

11razor2013The last series of coastal razor clam digs ended on a soggy and stormy note with very little effort, but digging has been off-the-charts in between all the nasty weather.

“Digging Monday night was a blow out from the winds blowing 35 to 50 miles per hour, and hard rain, but it was pretty darn good before that,” said Dan Ayres, the head state Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish manager.

“I was out last Friday at Mocrocks and we counted just over 800 people, and people were coming off the beach early with their (15-clam) daily limits,” Ayres said. “It was nice and easy clam digging with light crowds. That was the same story at places like Long Beach although the clams were still on the small side. I know someone who lives near Westport and they found bigger clams at Grayland.”

“In general everyone seems to happy with the season so far,” he said.”The good news with this season is there will be many chances to go digging, and people should feel like they need to go when the weather is lousy unless that is the only chance to go.”

Ayres says samples of razor clams were sent to the Department of Health, and they should have final approval on the next series of digs by Thursday (Dec. 11) or Friday (Dec. 12) to give folks an earlier notice than usual.

Digs are scheduled at Long Beach and Twin Harbors on Dec. 19-23 and Dec. 31-Jan. 7; Mocrocks on Dec. 19-21 and Dec. 31-Jan. 4; and Copalis on Dec. 20 and Dec. 31-Jan. 3. Digging is open each day from noon to midnight only.
