Outdoor writer Dave Graybill finds plenty east side winter trout fishing action

Trout anglers in our region have a lot to look forward to in our early winter season. There are terrific opportunities to take big trout before our lakes get a cap of ice.

Last year a made a couple of trips to Lake Roosevelt and tried the fishing from shore near the Spring Canyon Park.  I limited ounce in two hours on rainbow that averaged 16 inches and have caught them to 22 inches here.

On my last outing to Rufus Woods Eric Granstrom and I got four fish in a few hours.  Three were a pound to a pound and a half and one was 21 inches and weighed close to 3 pounds.

Another spot I want to try soon is at Potholes Reservoir.

The area known as Medicare Beach, across from Mar Don Resort is known to produce rainbow to over 20 inches in the winter.  The same can be said for Banks Lake.

One of the popular shore fishing spots here is at the Coulee City Marina.  I also like to take my fly rod down to Rocky Ford in the winter.  I have caught rainbow to 27 inches on the Ford, and that’s a good trout in anybody’s book.
