Next coastal razor clam digs will begin Saturday

20razor2013The next coastal razor clam digs have been approved to begin this Saturday, and state fishery shellfish managers expect a decent turnout during the upcoming three-day holiday weekend.

Digging will be open Saturday through Jan. 24 at Long Beach and Twin Harbors; Saturday and Jan. 24 at Copalis; and Saturday and Jan. 18 and Jan. 23-24 at Mocrocks. Digging is allowed from noon to midnight each day.

When the weather and surf have cooperated during previous digs most diggers were able to get their 15 clam razor clam daily limit with most clams averaging a 4 to 5 inches.

Digging at Long Beach saw 19,738 diggers taking home 223,389 from Dec. 31-Jan. 7 for an average of 11.9 per person; Twin Harbors had 9,573 with 141,300 for 14.8 from Dec. 31-Jan. 7; Copalis had 11,969 with 176,715 for 14.8 from Dec. 31-Jan. 3; and Mocrocks had 7,817 with 116,135 for 14.9 from Dec. 31-Jan. 4.

Since the season began Oct. 7 through Jan. 7, a preliminary total of 131,545 diggers have gathered more than 1.6-million razor clams on four open beaches.

Low tides: Saturday, 0.1 feet at 4:15 p.m.; Sunday, -0.6 at 5:02 p.m.; Monday, -1.1 at 5:47 p.m.; Jan. 20, -1.4 at 6:30 p.m.; Jan. 21, -1.4 at 7:13 p.m.; Jan. 22, -1.1 at 7:56 p.m.; Jan. 23, -0.6 at 8:40 p.m.; and Jan. 24, 0.1 at 9:25 p.m.

Other tentative digs are Jan. 30 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks; Jan. 31 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks and Copalis; Feb. 1 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks; and Feb. 2-6, Long Beach and Twin Harbors. More digs are also scheduled for Feb. 15-22.
