State Fish and Wildlife Columbia River regional fishing reports

Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River – 42 bank anglers kept 2 steelhead.  6 boat anglers had no catch.

During five days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator, last week Tacoma Power recovered:

283 coho adults and 3 jacks

179 winter-run steelhead

Five cutthroat trout

During the past week Tacoma Power employees released:

49 coho adults, two jacks, 20 winter-run steelhead and five cutthroat trout into the Tilton River at Gust Backstrom Park in Morton.

25 coho adults, one jack and two winter-run steelhead into Lake Scanewa above Cowlitz Falls Dam

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 13,900 cubic feet per second on Tuesday, January 20. Water visibility is nine feet.

Bonneville Pool – No effort was observed.

The Dalles and John Day pools – Anglers are catching some summer run steelhead though all fish sampled were of the wild variety and had to be released.

Sturgeon

Bonneville Pool – Boat anglers are catching some legals.  Fishing continues to be slow for bank anglers.

Through Jan. 11, an estimated 67 (6.1%) of the 1,100 fish guideline had been taken.  This year’s catch is exactly half of the 134 fish estimated caught at the same time last year.

The Dalles Pool – Light effort and catch.

John Day Pool – Boat anglers are catching some legals.  Fishing was slow from the bank.

Walleye and Bass

Bonneville and The Dalles Pool – Light effort and no catch for walleye.  No effort was observed for bass.

John Day Pool – Boat anglers averaged nearly 2 walleye per rod when including fish released.  No effort was observed for bass.

Trout

Kress Lake – 105 early winter (formerly Chambers Creek stock) steelhead were released into Kress Lake last week.  No report on angling success.
