Pete Carroll: ‘We just want to keep developing our team’

INDIANAPOLIS — The Seahawks have one of the youngest teams in the league, they hold 10 draft picks and have millions of dollars in cap space.

Given the team’s need to improve the pass rush, does that mean Seattle would be more apt to spend for a veteran in free agency?

Not necessarily, said coach Pete Carroll.

“We’re not more apt to do anything at this time, I don’t think,” Carroll said. “Because we were close last year? Oh, just get one more guy, that will make a difference. I don’t think that. And John (Schneider) and I don’t feel that way. We just want to keep developing our team. Allow our team to grow, and to mature, but we’ll still look at every single opportunity.”

Both Dwight Freeney of Indianapolis and Osi Umenyiora of the New York Giants are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents. Carroll didn’t rule anything out, but he made it clear that Seattle isn’t going to start spending on 30-somethings now that it has rebuilt itself into a contender.

“There are guys out there that are at the later stages of their career that we will look at,” Carroll said, ”but not with the thought, ‘Let’s just get a couple of old guys to really put it all together.’ I don’t think that that’s where we are. This team has really been built from the inside with the young guys. We’ve got some great experienced players, but for the most part, this is a very young football team, and we’ll continue to go that way.”
