Defensive lineman Greg Scruggs likely done for the year after ACL surgery

Seahawks defensive lineman Greg Scruggs is likely out for the year after having surgery Thursday for a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

Scruggs, who had reconstructive arthroscopic surgery at the Seattle Surgery Center according to the Seahawks, was a candidate for playing time after working his way into the rotation as a rookie. The Seahawks took Scruggs in the seventh round of the 2012 draft. He played in 11 games his first year and recorded two sacks.

Scruggs tweeted on Thursday that he knew he was going to need surgery for about three weeks and said he was in good spirits.

The Seahawks defensive line quickly became a crowded place this offseason after the additions of free agents Cliff Avril, Tony McDaniel and Michael Bennett, and the Seahawks drafted Jordan Hill (third round) and Jesse Williams (fifth round) in April. Seattle also returns stalwarts Red Bryant, Bruce Irvin, Brandon Mebane and Chris Clemons, who is recovering from an ACL injury suffered in last season’s playoffs.

Here are the tweets Scruggs sent out on Thursday:
