Hawks release WR Martin, claim long snapper Nelson off waivers

The Seattle Seahawks announced this afternoon that they have released wide receiver Charly Martin and claimed long snapper Kyle Nelson off waivers from the 49ers.

As the Seahawks’ release on the move stated, Martin spent one year in Seattle, playing in four games with one start and recording four receptions for 42 yards last season. He entered the league as an undrafted rookie free agent with Carolina in 2009 and also spent time on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad in 2011. In four seasons, Martin has played in 12 games with one start, with five receptions for 48 yards with a long of 15.

Nelson snapped in six games last season for the San Diego Chargers after signing as a free agent on Nov. 21, 2012. He was released by San Diego on May 20 and claimed off waivers by San Francisco the following day, until being released on July 10. Signed as an undrafted free agent by New Orleans during training camp of the 2011 season, Nelson has also had stints with Kansas City and Philadelphia.

Martin’s release means Seattle currently has 13 receivers on its 90-man training camp roster.

Nelson will  compete for the long snapping job with Clint Gresham, who has held the spot for the last three seasons.

Gresham is due to make $1.323 million this season.
